    Bible - OT - Kings: Baptism of Water and Fire

    The following suggestion is inspired by the renowned scholar Josh Davis:

    The “wheeled stands” made by Hiram for Solomon’s temple form a gauntlet of water stretching to the east of the temple. A worshiper approaching the temple passes through the water, reliving the experience of the exodus. Inside the temple, Solomon placed 10 lampstands of gold, which are also arranged in two rows of five. A priest approaching the Debir (Most Holy Place) passes between the rows of burning golden trees.

    When we think of John the Baptist’s comparison of his ministry to that of Jesus in the light of this structure, the following picture emerges: John says that he baptizes with water; the best he can do is qualify the Jews to approach the temple and enter the court. But one is coming after who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire; Jesus Himself passes through the fire into the heavenly MHP, and he comes to “baptize” us through the fire into the presence of God.
